Service is a cornerstone of Wesleyan's curriculum, which explains why there's always so much going on through Wesleyan's Lane Center for Community Engagement and Service. 

This academic center of excellence initiates community leadership development and coordinates numerous projects (such as Aunt Maggie’s Kitchen Table, The William and Ellen Craft Saturday School, Wesleyan Volunteers for Literacy, Habitat for Humanity, WOW Days for Macon) which engage our students and faculty with needs of the community. 

The center also organizes numerous conferences about women’s health and wellness, servant leadership, and community leadership development.  Many lectures, conferences, and workshops are open to the public.  Be sure to check our calendar for these events! Some recent Lane Center news items include:

Suntrust Vice President Sissy Macfie was one of seven women executives who donated dozens of women’s suits, accessories, shoes, and handbags to the Professional Women’s Clothes Closet at Wesleyan’s Lane Center for Community Engagement & Service. The closet helps women look their best as they transition to the workforce and prepare for job interviews or important meetings. Students and members of the community may take up to five garments per visit. Pictured are Lane Center Director Rhonda Green-Barnes (L) and Macfie (R).


Wesleyan Receives President’s Honor Roll
with Distinction Award, AGAIN!
Wesleyan College has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. 2009 marks Wesleyan’s second year on this prestigious Distinction Award list, an honor no other college or university in the state can claim.

Lane Center Director Honored with Champion Award
Rhonda Green-Barnes Rhonda Green-Barnes, director of Wesleyan’s Lane Center, was awarded the 40th Anniversary EFNEP Champion Award by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension - Colleges of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and Family and Consumer Services.

WOW! A day for Macon community-wide service event
Wesleyan College organized more than one hundred volunteers through its WOW! A Day for Macon community-wide service event and completed multiple projects simultaneously at a dozen separate work sites throughout the city of Macon. Students, faculty, staff, and community volunteers joined together for the mass effort coordinated through Wesleyan’s Lane Center for Community Engagement and Service.

Imaginative Writing Project has already inspired a larger community vision
Through a new, innovative service project, Wesleyan students helped twelve community children author, illustrate, and publish books through the Imaginative Writing Project.  At the celebration event, each new author was presented with a copy of their story as a published book. The day came fully equipped with applause, autographs, tears, and media attention.

Tina McElroy Ansa addressed students at Opening Fall Convocation
Former Journalist Tina McElroy Ansa is also the author and publisher of four novels addressing family, community, empowerment and personal survival. She implored students to listen to the pattern of their lives through an inspiring lecture in the Porter Auditorium.

Don Mosley & Jubilee Partners
Peace Activist, Author and Co-Founder of Jubilee Partners, a refugee resettlement center in Comer, Georgia, has traveled across the world addressing issues of peace in more than forty countries.

Servant leadership philosophy becoming a hot business trend
Servant leadership incorporates an authentic gift to lead with a more purposeful vision, and many local businesses are anxious to capitalize on the concept. According to the more than one hundred participants of a seminar series hosted by Wesleyan College, redefining leadership is not just a trend it’s everybody’s business.

Exemplary Macon Family Honored in Lane Center Dedication Ceremony
Wesleyan College dedicated its Lane Center for Community Engagement & Service to an exemplary local family during a ceremony  honoring William and Eleanor Lane, '58, and the memory of Linda Lane.   
 
Rosalynn Carter visits Macon
Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter met with Wesleyan College Professor Dr. Catherine Meeks during a site tour of the community outreach program, Aunt Maggie's Kitchen Table, located in the Anthony Homes public housing development.
