Major: Computer Information Systems
Minor: Computer Science

Wesleyan’s computer information systems (CIS) program provides a well-rounded background in computer information systems and prepares students for further study or for applying their knowledge in a variety of scientific, business, and industrial settings. There is a dual emphasis on managing data systems and on programming.
The curriculum supports the development, implementation, and management of systems for data acquisition, analysis, maintenance, and distribution. It shares much with computer science, especially the fundamental programming skills, but adds emphasis on the system and the information the system maintains, while reducing the emphasis on hardware design and some of the more engineering-related topics in computer science.
Wesleyan’s minor in computer science focuses on methods and standards for the analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation of computational problem solving. Computer science courses at Wesleyan enhance other programs including mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, business, art, computer information systems, and dual degree engineering. For information about specific courses offered, please see our Academic Catalogue.
Facilities
Wesleyan College has state of the art classrooms and labs in support of the CIS program. All have wired and wireless networking and new desktop computers. The computing facilities in the CIS lab provide students an extensive hands-on learning experience. Additionally, Wesleyan's campus infrastructure supports the CIS major. Several electronic classrooms have been implemented throughout the campus to provide an environment where CIS students can obtain relevant experience. Internships in the Computer and Information Resources Department or Technology Development Center are also available. In some instances, a student may be selected as a Computer Resident Assistant to provide technical support in the residence halls. Such opportunities provide CIS students with valuable hands-on experience.
Outcomes & Post-graduate Opportunities
The US Department of Labor maintains a list of the fastest growing occupations and many of them are related to a CIS major. Our CIS program graduates are well-prepared to succeed in a wide variety of technology-related careers, such as web developer, project manager, business analyst, systems analyst, database administrator, network administrator, or application programmer. Career opportunities are excellent and there is high demand with good entry-level salaries for qualified CIS graduates. In fact, U.S.News & World Report recently ranked systems analyst as one of the Top 10 best careers for 2007 graduates citing excellent job marketability and median salary of $70,000+ for candidates holding a bachelor's degree.
