Distinguished Achievement in a Profession

A trial attorney who has extensive experience in the defense of product liability and toxic tort cases, Stephanie Parker is a partner in the Atlanta office of Jones Day, an international law firm with 2,500 lawyers in over 30 offices around the globe. Stephanie has served national clients in the tobacco, chemical, pharmaceutical, gasoline, medical device, and automotive industries. For more than ten years, Stephanie has served as lead trial counsel for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in numerous jury trials. Currently, she is lead counsel for R.J. Reynolds in its Engle progeny litigation, which involves over 9,000 plaintiffs.

Stephanie’s exceptional work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and other national media. She also was highlighted in Georgia Trend magazine as one of its “Women in Business,” and she is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA, Legal 500, Georgia Super Lawyers, Georgia’s “Top 50 Women Attorneys,” and Georgia Trend’s “Legal Elite.” Several of her recent trials have been shown on Courtroom View Network.

A member of the American Law Institute, Stephanie is a Master of the Bleckley Inn of Court. She has served on the Bar Council of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. She also frequently speaks on legal topics and has lectured throughout the United States.

Growing up in Gray, Georgia, Stephanie was encouraged to consider Wesleyan by her mother and grandmother, both of whom attended women’s colleges. She participated in the Governor's Honors program at Wesleyan one summer during high school and fell in love with the beautiful campus. Of Wesleyan’s many benefits, Stephanie particularly appreciated the small class sizes and the emphasis on independent study. She notes that writing at least one paper and preparing an oral presentation every week is great training for a prospective lawyer. She shares many fond memories of Wesleyan with her sister, Beth Parker Davis ’83.

As a pre-law student, Stephanie profited from a hands-on internship with the Macon law firm Anderson, Walker & Reichert. After graduating from Wesleyan, Stephanie earned her J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1984. She served as a law clerk to The Honorable Wilbur D. Owens, Jr., before going into private law practice.

A valuable member of Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees for six years, Stephanie has served also as class liaison and Loyalty Fund Chair. She continues to support Wesleyan through an endowed scholarship in memory of her grandmother, Ethel Moore Roberts. The scholarship honors her grandmother’s commitment to her community and is awarded to students who are engaged in community service. Active in the larger community as well, Stephanie is a member of the Rotary Club of Atlanta and has served on the boards of the Federal Defender Program, Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia (two years as Chairman), YWCA, Georgia Women of Achievement, Vanderbilt University School of Law, and Georgia State University School of Law. Stephanie founded the Spelman-Morehouse internship at Jones Day for college students in Atlanta who are interested in becoming lawyers.

For her considerable accomplishments and unwavering commitment to her profession;
for building upon the ideals of excellence she embraced as a student at Wesleyan; and for her faithfulness to her alma mater and ensuring the future of generations of Wesleyannes to come, the Wesleyan College Alumnae Association presents the Alumnae Award for Distinguished Achievement in a Profession to Stephanie Parker, Class of 1981.
