Scholarship for Leadership

Each year the Wesleyan College Alumnae Association awards a scholarship for leadership to a rising junior who is selected for her outstanding leadership qualities and the good academic standing she has shown during her first two years at the College. This year the recipient is Kayla Butler, Class of 2014.

In her hometown of Chattanooga, TN, Kayla attended Notre Dame High School, where she was a standout in many of the same areas in which she has excelled at Wesleyan - as a student ambassador, a member of campus ministry, and a student athlete. During her high school service learning project, she began volunteering at Chattanooga Room in the Inn, an organization that helps homeless women and their children regain footing in their lives. Room in the Inn focuses on teaching job skills, helping women finish their education, and providing them with a sense of empowerment to continue to shine after they have finished the program. Kayla found her special niche in after-school tutoring for their children, ranging from elementary to high school students. But there was something else that was special about Room in the Inn. In Kayla’s words, “This was my first experience in helping with a women’s only organization where even my supervisor was a graduate of a women’s college, and it is when I began to see the benefits of an environment where you are supported by other ambitious, intelligent, and caring women.”

Once “Wesleyan found her,” Kayla dove into being a class and campus leader. She’s been a class soccer player, STUNT participant, Wave member, and Splinter. Kayla has been an active member of Wesleyan College Republicans for the past two years, and is planning to take on the position of chairman of the Wesleyan College chapter in the 2012-2013 academic year. She was recently hired by the student affairs staff as one of the head orientation leaders and summer conference assistants. As an executive board member of Wesleyan Disciples, Kayla holds the community service chair, where she coordinates the majority of service events in which Disciples participate both on and off campus each semester. As a Disciple, Kayla has participated in WOW! A Day for Macon and volunteered at Aunt Maggie’s Kitchen Table and Loaves and Fishes.

In addition to her full slate of leadership roles, Kayla maintains a superior academic standing. She has been named to the Dean’s List and is a Pierce Pioneer Leadership Scholar. After earning a double major at Wesleyan in International Relations and Pre-Law, she plans to graduate a year early in 2013 and attend law school. Kayla says: “In my studies at Wesleyan I have discovered a deep passion for international human rights and the legal fields surrounding the subject, and wish to dedicate my life to advancing this legal field in order to improve the lives of others.”

For her outstanding leadership and potential; for her scholastic achievements and
honors; for service she has given to the Macon community and to Wesleyan, especially as a role model for first and second year students; and for upholding Wesleyan traditions and ideals as a class leader, the Wesleyan College Alumnae Association is proud to present the Scholarship for Leadership award to Kayla Butler, Class of 2014.
