Wesleyan is well-known for its outstanding equestrian program. With two national champions in hunt seat and western events in recent years, we really know how to jump in the saddle. Our equestrians compete in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association(IHSA) and Affiliated National Riding Commission (ANRC) events.
Since the establishment of the program in 1928, the program has developed the unique ability to accommodate riders competing at varying skill levels; however, National-competition status is a feat a number of our women have accomplished. Most recently, Katie Murphy, a 2005 graduate of Brunswick, Georgia, finished 12th overall at the IHSA Nationals in Sunbury, Ohio.
At the heart of Wesleyan’s equestrian program are sixteen high caliber horses with extensive show records. Several of our horses have competed successfully at USEF (United States Equestrian Federation) and AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) recognized horse shows. With the help of our riders, the horses have accomplished everything from the Medal Maclay to Western Pleasure.
Our horses enjoy the pleasures of the Nancy Ellis Knox Equestrian Center which was completed in the summer of 1999 with the construction of the 24-stall barn. The barn is equipped with student and boarder tack rooms, three wash racks, feed rooms, as well as classroom, meeting and office space. There are six turn-out paddocks connected by a fenced allée and a lighted riding ring. With all of these accommodations, a number of our students find boarding their horse on campus provides convenience, safety, health, and peace of mind. |
