Wesleyan College announces New Academic Dean
May 21, 2007
Dr. Vivia Fowler will join the administration of Wesleyan College as the next Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs beginning in July of 2007. She currently holds several positions at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina, a sister women's college that also is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Those positions include Director of General Education and Director of the Center for Engaged Learning, Spears Professor of Religion, and Co-Executive Director of eChristianEd, a web-based program that provides training for United Methodist church leaders around the world. She also has held the following administrative positions at Columbia College: Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies; Chairperson, Department of Religion; Director of Learning Communities; Assistant Director of Honors; and Coordinator, Center for Contractual Studies.
Dr. Fowler graduated cum laude from Columbia College (1976) and earned a Master of Arts in Religion at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (1980) and a PhD in Religious Education at the University of South Carolina (1994). With particular expertise in the first-year experience and with a background that includes teaching, administration, and service, Dr. Fowler brings a wide variety of talents to Wesleyan.
Dr. Fowler will replace Delmas S. Crisp, Jr., Ph.D., who has served as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academics Affairs since 2001. Crisp arrived at Wesleyan in 1988 and served as the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of English and later the Division Chair of Humanities before accepting the role of Dean. Throughout his nearly 20 years at the College, he has taught various classes in the English department with his areas of specialty being Chaucer, Shakespeare, and British Medieval and Renaissance Literature. Del became Dean of the College in 2001. He leaves Wesleyan to assume the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs at Methodist College in Fayetteville, NC.
