DSPARC: Igniting the Fire of Math and Science Education
The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Wesleyan College $576,000 for its Math/Science Student Preparation and Retention Collaborative (M/S SPARC). Through this five-year grant funded by the NSF-sponsored Scholarships in Science and Technology Engineering and Math (S-STEM) initiative, two cohorts of high achieving, socioeconomically disadvantaged women from rural and inner city schools across Georgia will receive financial and programmatic support for a successful career in the fields of math and science. Wesleyan has welcomed eight SPARC scholars who plan to graduate with degrees in chemistry, biology or mathematics for the 2011-2012 academic year, and recruitment for a second cohort is underway.

Dr. William Earl Strickland Memorial Service
Wesleyan mourns the loss of Dr. William Earl Strickland, president of the College from 1960 to 1979, who died Monday, August 15, 2011, at the age of 91. A memorial service will be held Thursday at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church with Wesleyan President Ruth A. Knox, Bishop Bevel Jones and Pastor Tommy Mason officiating. At noon on Thursday, Wesleyan College will toll its carillon nineteen times, honoring each year of Dr. Strickland’s service as president.

Wesleyan College to add Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program
In response to statewide demand for qualified registered nurses, Wesleyan College is developing a pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with courses to begin Fall Semester 2013, pending full approval by the Georgia Board of Nursing and The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Commission on Colleges.

Wesleyan College Ranks High with Princeton Review
Wesleyan College offers students an outstanding undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review.  The New York-based education services company features the college in the new 2012 edition of its annual book, The Best 376 Colleges, and gives high ratings for academics and classroom experience.

Wesleyan claims Macon’s first Gold LEED Certification project
Wesleyan College received Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification for its newly renovated Taylor Hall. The award, from the Green Building Certification Institute, recognizes the building’s energy efficiency and the sustainability of the design and building materials used in its construction.

Ways & Means Director Mays delivers 2011 commencement address
Wesleyan’s graduating seniors anxiously awaited the call to action and inspiration of commencement speaker Janice A. Mays, U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee Democratic Staff Director, Chief Counsel, and Chief Tax Counsel. Wesleyan graduated 94 candidates for undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degrees on May 14, 2011.

Wesleyan is named #9 BEST VALUE Private College!
Wesleyan College is the nation's #9 "Best Value" private college for 2011 according to The Princeton Review, one of America's most widely known education services and test preparation companies. The Princeton Review teamed with USA TODAY, the nation's most widely read print newspaper, to present its list, "The Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2011."

CNN Money names Wesleyan in Top 10
According to CNN Money, Wesleyan College is one of the nation's Top Bargains. The College is one of just a dozen schools to be named Great Bargain Colleges under $20,000.

Wesleyan Receives President’s Honor Roll
with Distinction Award, AGAIN!
Wesleyan College has been named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. 2010 marks Wesleyan’s third year on this prestigious Distinction Award list, an honor no other college or university in the state can claim.

Forbes claims Wesleyan is America's 15th Best College Buy
Wesleyan College is among America’s Top 100 Best Colleges, according to new rankings from Forbes magazine. It is one of only two institutions from the state of Georgia to appear in the Top 100. 2009 marked the publication’s second annual listing; Wesleyan also appeared on the inaugural list in 2008.

Wesleyan announces new Master of Education program
Approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) this week, the Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Early Childhood education has been designed to meet the needs of teachers in the middle Georgia and surrounding area and will add a significant component to Wesleyan’s graduate programming. The College is already accepting applications and the first cohort class will begin June of 2010.

Wesleyan College ranks as one of the nation’s Top 100 liberal arts colleges in the fifth annual Washington Monthly College Rankings. The 2010 guide highlights national institutions known for academic excellence and ranks the institutions based on indicators of ability to produce future leaders. Wesleyan Announces Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarships
Effective Fall Semester 2010, Wesleyan College will award annual scholarships valued at $9,000 a year to Girl Scout Gold Award recipients. The new scholarship program was developed to honor the commitment to service and community leadership exemplified through the Girl Scout Gold Award program.

Wesleyan College proudly announces the flagship publication of its new press, a tribute to The Architectural Works of W. Elliott Dunwody, Jr., FAIA. Written by James E. Barfield and featuring the photography of Walter G. Elliott, this exquisite book of elegant architectural photography and insights celebrates many of the historic Macon homes treasured today.

Wesleyan completes renovation of its historic 1925 organ
Experience the majesty of Aeolian Opus 1542! Wesleyan’s historic Goodwyn-Candler-Panoz organ, the largest musical instrument in central Georgia, is the centerpiece of much celebration. Recently redesigned and expanded through a million dollar renovation project, the 1925 instrument (and its nearly 5,000 pipes) is vibrating the Wesleyan campus with new energy.

WOW! A day for Macon community-wide service event
Wesleyan College organized more than one hundred volunteers through its WOW! A Day for Macon community-wide service event and completed multiple projects simultaneously at a dozen separate work sites throughout the city of Macon. Students, faculty, staff, and community volunteers joined together for the mass effort coordinated through Wesleyan’s Lane Center for Community Engagement and Service.

Wesleyan President Commits to ‘Climate Neutral’ Campus
Ruth Knox Joins Growing List of Higher Education Leaders to Fight Global Warming. Wesleyan committed to sharply reducing and eventually eliminating all of the College’s global warming emissions, and accelerating the research and educational efforts to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate. The pledge came with Knox’s signing of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, joining the leaders of 400 other institutions across the country.

Wesleyan joins national initiative to offer improved consumer resources
New U-CAN website offers prospective students an alternative to national US News college ranking information. Wesleyan College supports a national initiative to provide comprehensive public information to help prospective students judge the quality of higher education institutions. Currently, no single objective consumer resource exists to help prospective students choose a college or university that best fits their needs. Participation in a new web-based project called U-CAN is one step toward the commitment to offer consumers improved resources.

New Study Finds Women's Colleges Better Equipped to Help Students
The Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research suggests that students at women's colleges are better served in their educational pursuits than their peers at coeducational institutions. In addition, educational gains made by students at women's colleges counter claims that women lag behind their male counterparts in subjects like math, science, and engineering.   

Wesleyan students corroborate national study findings
Wesleyan College is not surprised by recent information released from the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research (IUCPR). One student claims, “The fact that Wesleyan is a women's college kept me focused and motivated to achieve only the best.”

Wesleyan College outperforms Top 10% on national NSSE study
According to the seventh annual report of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), Wesleyan College outperformed the Top 10% of colleges and universities nationally in all five categories studied: active and collaborative learning, enriching educational experiences, level of academic challenge, student-faculty interaction, and supportive campus environment.

Global Partnerships: Wesleyan officials expand a simple foreign exchange program  When Wesleyan College and Ulyanovsk State University’s Student Exchange Program began in 1999, few realized the program had the potential to become a model of excellence for ambassadorship and global community leadership. But unexpectedly, the participants of the program became completely inspired by the cultural exchange of ideas. As a result, a simple foreign exchange program has grown into a network of international relationships. Those involved claim the momentum has only just begun.

Wesleyan named a “College of Distinction”
Wesleyan College has been named a “college of distinction” by Student Horizons, Inc. and will be one of 300 colleges highlighted in a guidebook published later this year. Through its publication and website, the organization profiles teaching-centered colleges and universities throughout the United States that consistently excel at engaging students, fostering vibrant campus communities, and producing successful graduates.”
