Involvement in both in-class and out-of-class activities has been proven to enhance a student’s overall experience within college and build a more holistic student. At Wesleyan College, we pride ourselves as being an academically rigorous institution, where students work hard, but play hard, too!
Students drive the activities produced on campus. By taking active roles in their campus and surrounding community, Wesleyannes begin developing their leadership skills the moment they step on campus. Whether they run for student election, lead a solo in Sunday Chapel or assist their professors in innovative research, Wesleyannes are encouraged and trained to become better leaders, which will assist them through their tenure at Wesleyan, as well as future endeavors.
According to graduate Lindsay Rosenquist ’06, “There are more leadership opportunities on a smaller campus, which helps prepare you for something more purposeful — community leadership instills a greater sense of responsibility.”
Aside from grabbing a leadership role in one or more of the forty-plus student organizations on our campus, Wesleyan students have unique opportunities to develop leadership skills through specially-designed programs sponsored by the College -- like Summer Leadership Institute or Pioneering Leaders Program. And through partnerships with external organizations, students have unlimited opportunities!
Wesleyanne Tiffany Hatch, for example, was selected as one of fifty-one national recipients of the Kellogg Collegiate Women of Color Leadership Institute and attended a leadership enrichment conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Through the program, Tiffany received a $2,500 stipend to fund a leadership project within her own community. She decided to work with the Bibb County Board of Education to set up a mentoring program with Wesleyan students and school-aged children. Read about her experience!
